These days, there is a lot of emphasis on keeping healthy, and this includes the snacks we eat. There's no reason why you can't make the same healthy snack choices for your dog.

Although there are many things you can feed your dog as a snack, or as an energy booster, there are some treats that he should never be given.

Some dogs become quite ill when they eat grapes or raisins. In fact, these dogs can develop irreversible kidney failure, and die. Even a small handful of grapes is enough to make your dog sick. There's no way to tell if a particular dog will have any problems with grapes and sultanas, so it's safer just to avoid sharing them with him.

Chocolate is another snack that you should keep very much to yourself. It contains theobromine, and it is this ingredient that is toxic to your dog. Dark cooking chocolate is more toxic than milk chocolate or white chocolate. Depending on your dog's weight and how much chocolate he has eaten, he may develop depression, vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures. Without treatment, he may die. I'm sure you won't be too disappointed when I suggest you keep your chocolate to yourself!

Let's have a look at what you can feed your dog.

Firstly, you can gently steam small pieces of vegetable such as carrot, and give them to him. They're not fattening and can be a source of fiber. However, they may not be the tastiest of treats, and your dog may not want them.

Hot dogs, sausages, bacon and other tasty meat products are very popular with dogs, however they can be fatty. Too many of them will see your dog gain a few pounds very quickly.

You can purchase packets of dried liver pieces from the supermarket or pet store, and these are a tasty and popular snack for dogs. They're also particularly handy for training your dog. Although liver is healthy, it isn't good for your dog in large amounts. It contains vitamin A, and too much of this vitamin can cause a dull coat and depression.

Pet stores also sell packets of biscuits for your dog. These are a yummy snack to give your dog, and they often come in different flavors. Alternatively, you can create your own delicious baked snack for your dog; there are recipes on the internet to tempt even the fussiest of dogs.

When you're looking to choose a supermarket or pet store biscuit for your dog, check the label. Ideally, they should contain some meat or meat by products, rather than be made just from cereals and grains. Although a dog snack may be labelled as "low fat", it may still have high sugar levels. These are still calories that will make their way to your dog's waistline.

Even the healtheist snack is no good for your dog if he is given too much. Obesity has so many adverse effects on your dog's health, so don't overdo the snacks. If you follow the suggestion "everything in moderation", and avoid the toxic snacks, you can't go too far wrong.

I think a snack is anything that gets dropped on the floor for more than 5 seconds.
